Award of Merit

Award of Merit 2009 presentation.

The search is on for those unsung heroes of Ceredigion!

Do you know someone who works tirelessly for others, someone who has raised a lot of money for charity, or even someone who has risked their lives to help someone in need?

For the eighth year running, in a link-up between Ceredigion County Council and the Cambrian News, awards are to be given to honour our outstanding community achievers.

Nominations are being sought from members of the public for the Ceredigion Awards of Merit, recognising those who go the extra mile to help their neighbours, those who have carried out outstanding acts of bravery, and those who have brought credit to the county through sport, art, culture, industry or inventions.

The awards were launched eight years ago by the county council, and are again being sponsored by the Cambrian News, whose Managing Editor Beverly Thomas will be one of the four judges. The awards will be presented at the county council’s annual dinner in Lampeter later this year.

Do you know someone in your town or village whose voluntary work sets them head and shoulder above others? Someone who puts in hours helping others for no reward?

Could you nominate someone whose sporting, artistic or cultural achievements are of national significance and have brought credit to the county? Is there someone whose success in industry or commerce has benefitted the local economy as a whole or particular sections of the community.

Also eligible for nomination are those who have carried out outstanding acts of bravery. Members of the public and local organisations are urged to nominate local people for the awards. People are not, however, allowed to nominate themselves.

You will find the bilingual nomination form at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can download a form by clicking on the "Download Nomination Form" link below, or from the county council’s website www.ceredigion.gov.uk .

For postal nominations, your reasons for nominating should be written on a separate sheet and enclosed with the nomination form. The panel of judges will then sift through the nominations to find two winners.

The closing date for nominations is 3 September.

The awards were the brainchild of county councillor Goronwy Edwards and former councillor, the late Gareth Ellis.

Cllr Edwards said: “There are a lot of people in the county who have done a lot of good work for no reward. This is a way for them to be recognised.”

Cambrian News Managing Editor Beverly said: “The Cambrian News is pleased to be sole sponsor for this award scheme to honour those people who - without asking for reward or recognition - do so much for their local community. It’s a community award and we are your community newspaper. It is very humbling to judge these awards, and is particularly special for us in this, our 150th anniversary year. Please make sure you nominate. It’s a great opportunity to give them the recognition they deserve.”
