Pwllheli ease to victory
Pwllheli (112 for 1) won at
Rhewl (111 all out) by nine wickets
PWLLHELI an emphatic nine-wicket away win in the North Wales League division one at the expense of Rhewl, to maintain their promotion efforts last weekend.
There were some superior bowling and batting display, notably Nadeem Rehman, who collected three wickets and then also went on to score an unbeaten 34 runs.
Pwllheli’s other bowling successes were Chris Moore and Mike Hughes, who also pocketed three wickets, and opening bat Neil Williams, who slammed 57 not out.
Rhewl were invited to bat first on a damp, unhelpful wicket, which saw them struggle for a modest 111 all out in 29 overs.
The only contribution of significance was produced by number three batsman Ed Hurst, who stood his ground in making 58 runs, as partners came and went.
Hurst hoisted three sixes in a patient display, while the bowling honours were enjoyed by the visitors’ four-man attack.
Pacey Chris Moore offered 13 overs to gain his three wickets for 25 runs, Nadeem Rehman’s threesome cost 31 runs in 10 overs and Mike Hughes conceded 32 runs for his three wickets’ haul, with Ben Jones returning one for 18 in seven overs.
After a brief pause for rain during the Rhewl innings, the match was reduced to 96 overs, which left Pwllheli with all of 60 overs to reach the target, and in the end they required only 27 overs to triumph.
Ben Jones was trapped leg-before on seven runs, with the reply poised at 52, and then Neil Williams and Nadeem Rehman carried the score to victory, in an unbroken stand of 60 for the second wicket.
Williams’ 57 not out included 11 fours, to make 44 runs in boundary shots, and Rehman’s 34 not out featured six fours and one six - 30 runs for him in boundaries.
Opening bowler spinner Rob Eccles showed some spirit in a tidy stint of 13 overs for six maidens and a return of one wicket for 16 runs from his bowling spell.
