Shane nets double for Barmouth

Welsh Cup Second Qualifying Round

Barmouth and Dyffryn United 3

Howarden Randers 2

BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United progressed into the first round proper of this season’s Welsh Cup, despite producing a fairly mediocre performance against visitors Howarden Rangers.
The hosts were short of several regulars for this encounter and had to hold on to survive come the final whistle, after a Shane Jones double either side of the break and a third by Gareth Roberts in the 83rd minute.
In contrast, Hawarden who had taken the lead through an early opener by Danny Sullivan, might have felt they had also created enough chances to book their passage in round one. Yet, the Welsh League (Wrexham Area) premier division side were left to reflect on what might have been after finding home keeper Darren Andrews in fine form following a recent return from suspension.
Andy Watkins was dismissed for the visitors, and it went downhill after that for the Rangers, despite Liam Doran reducing the deficit with a goal late on.
• Barmouth and Dyffryn United secured their first Welsh Alliance win of the campaign with an impressive 4-1 success against Llanberis, in front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd.
Kerry Roberts had opened the scoring for the hosts after just six minutes, but Gareth Jones replied after 32 minutes to ensure honours were even at the interval.
Barmouth upped their tempo in the second half, with Craig Papinik restoring the lead on the hour, before a quick-fire double by Shane Jones on 72 and 77 minutes sealed the points.
Barmouth and Dyffryn United. who are ninth in the table, will be hoping to make up more ground when they travel to face mid-table side Glan Conwy on Saturday.
