Spar Mid Wales League Round-Up

PENPARCAU marked their first home outing of the campaign by progressing to the first round proper of the Welsh Cup with a convincing 4-0 victory over Gresford Athletic in the second qualifying round.
"Both sides tried to get the ball down and play football, but the first goal was all important," said boss Mike Gilbert who had to make changes with Tim Turner and Damon Smith both suspended and Wayne Gornall also missing.
In fact, the back four was made up of four fullbacks, including Terry Davies, a capture in the week from local rivals Bow Street who Penparcau met on Wednesday night.
With Anthony Foligno making his first appearance of the season, the hosts never looked back after Matty Davies bagged the crucial first goal on nine minutes when latching onto a through ball before drilling his shot past the keeper. And the hosts doubled the advantage before the break with the pick of the goals as Anthony Tedaldi, back from injury, launched a superb run through the defence before finding Mike Gornall who turned before curling his 15-yard shot into the net. Mike Gornall then turned provider for brother Marc to make it three after the interval, before Mike completed the scoring with his second of the game courtesy of a neat finish. After taking on Bow Street, Penparcau play their third successive home game when they tackle Dolgellau on Saturday.

MANAGER Emyr Jones praised Bow Street's resolve after roaring back for a 4-2 win at Wrexham side Llay Welfare in the second qualifying round of the Welsh Cup.
The visitors had trailed 2-1 in testing conditions, but turned the tie around with three goals to maintain their interest in the competition. "The lads showed great character in difficult conditions," said Jones. "Llay were a big, physical side and the pitch and facilities were poor and at 2-1 down we seemed to be going nowhere. But in the last 20 minutes we turned it round, we brought on three subs and showed a lot of spirit."
The encounter had started well enough with Liam Hinton Jones scoring his first senior goal in fine style when crashing his 25-yard shot into the top corner following a strong run from deep. But Llay hit back, levelling two minutes before he break when the ball rebounded for the striker to steer home despite claims for handball. And the Wrexham hosts got their noses in front soon after the break when skipper Joe Sherwood conceded a penalty after being adjudged to have handled. Prospects did not look good, but Bow Street earned parity with another well taken goal when Rhys Llwyd lobbed home from 25 yards before the introduction of three substitutes made an instant impression.
One of those subs, Gareth Hughes, fired home a third and was brought down in the box for the fourth, Dean Evans converting from the spot to seal the win. Boss Jones, meanwhile, was disappointed that Terry Davies has switched to local rivals Penparcau. Davies, who had been Jones' assistant at Aberystwyth reserves, had joined Bow Street in the summer, with his manager saying:
"We're sorry to see Terry go, but we wish him the best at Penparcau." Bow Street are on their travels again this week, with Penparcau the hosts on Wednesday night before visiting Presteigne on Saturday.

ANDREW Thomas marked his debut in Llanidloes colours with a vital strike as his new club saw off Llansantffraid Village 2-1 after extra time in the Welsh Cup.
The Daffs, watched by a healthy crowd including a band of over 300 ground hoppers at Victoria Avenue, had fallen behind to a 40-yard free kick from Alwyn Williams. But they took the second qualifying round tie into extra time when former Caersws defender Thomas - who joined in the week from Newtown pounced to level after a free kick had been nodded into his path by Jack Bermingham 10 minutes from time. Llani looked strong in the extra period against their spirited Spar Mid Wales rivals, and they bagged what proved to be the winner when substitute Barry Bellis found Gareth Mansell who took on three defenders before firing his shot into the top corner.
Llanidloes (v Llansantffraid Village): A Warwick, D Lewis, A Thomas, W Sherwood, N Savage. C Reynolds, R Evans, J Bermingham, G Mansell, A Green, G Jones (B Bellis 55). Subs not used: A Jones, D Jarman.
Llanidloes, meanwhile, have been drawn at home to FC Nomads of Connah's Quay in the second round of the FAW Trophy.

TYWYN/BRYNCRUG booked their place in the first round proper of the Welsh Cup courtesy of a very committed home success over Spar Mid Wales League frontrunners Berriew. The Meirionnydd men secured their progress courtesy of goals from Mark Edmondson, a Paul Grant penalty, and Toby Williams, but they had to battle all the way against the visitors, with Neil Price scoring two penalties.

DOLGELLAU are also through to the first round proper after they held firm to secure a 1-0 win against Corwen. Sion Williams scored the only goal on the stroke of half-time for the Spar Mid Wales League outfit, although it proved to be a very close encounter against the Welsh League (Wrexham Area) Premier Division side.
