Aber Reserves keep title hopes alive
Spar Mid Wales League
Newtown Reserves 1
Aberystwyth Town Reserves 2
FORMER Newtown duo Stuart Fraser and Karl Seliearts returned to haunt their old club as Aberystwyth’s second string kept their Spar Mid Wales League title bid on track at Latham Park last weekend.
The ex-Robins front men netted a goal in each half but, from looking comfortable, the visitors had to stave off a home fightback in the second half that saw Matt Mumford pull one back for the hosts.
The victory keeps Aber joint top, albeit in third position on goal difference behind leaders Penparcau and Tywyn/Bryncrug who also secured victories on Saturday.
The Seasiders bossed the first half at Latham Park, and went ahead when Fraser nipped to score amid some defensive confusion involving a defender and keeper.
The visitors looked to be firmly in charge as Seliearts added a second after the interval with a fine strike that flew into the back of the net from outside the penalty box.
However, Newtown rallied as Aber dropped off the pace and it needed a couple of smart saves from Jonathan Hartnell in goal to keep the battling hosts at bay.
Mumford did pull one back when running through to score for the Robins, but the Black and Greens held firm to secure their 12th league success of the season.
Next up are struggling Llanfyllin to Park Avenue, with Aber certain to fancy their chances against a side who shipped in eight goals last week against Bow Street.
