Pwllheli dump Barmouth out
Barritt Cup Quarter-Final
Pwllheli 2
Barmouth and Dyffryn United 0
PWLLHELI will take on Glan Conwy in the semi-finals of the inter-league Barritt Cup after goals from Josh Banks and Barry Evans ended the challenge of Welsh Alliance rivals Barmouth and Dyffryn United.
It proved to be a convincing win for Pwllheli as they avenged a home defeat in the league earlier in the season with a solid display against the out-of-sorts visitors.
Visitors Barmouth never recovered after conceding two goals in the first quarter of an hour as they struggled to find a way past a determined and well-organised defence.
Gwyn Jones had fired an early warning just wide of the posts, before Pwllheli opened the scoring after just five minutes.
Josh Banks was released by Barry Evans on the right side and the talented 18-year-old proved his potential as he ran through the defence and saw his shot from a right angle fly high into Darren Andrews’ net.
Barmouth were still coming to terms with the setback when the confident hosts extended their lead on a quarter of an hour.
The lively Barry Evans rose highest to meet a Gareth Jones-Evans free kick from the right touchline and he powered his header past Barmouth keeper Andrews.
Barmouth huffed and puffed but failed to trouble Pwllheli, who went close to scoring a third goal when Martyn Smith had to make a last-gasp headed clearance to keep out a cross from left back Neil Jones.
Barmouth increased their tempo after the interval, but keeper Ian Aikman was hardly troubled by the high-flying visitors.
At the other end, defender Jason Jones almost cemented victory when he headed inches over the bar, and the hosts also had a couple of penalty appeals turned down.
It’s back to Welsh Alliance duty this weekend as Pwllheli entertain Welsh Trophy semi-finalists Llanberis, while Barmouth will hoping to bounce back when they travel to play lowly Halkyn United.
