Spar Mid Wales League
Tywyn/Bryncrug 3
Waterloo Rovers 0
TYWYN/BRYNCRUG maintained their push for the Spar Mid Wales League title as they overcame the challenge of a plucky Waterloo Rovers at home last weekend.
Two goals from Mark Edmondson and a Nick Williams headers ensured that the Meirionnydd men remained level on points with Penparcau and Aberystwyth Reserves at the top of the league table.
In a fascinating race for the title, just four points separate the top eight sides, although Tywyn are in a strong position with games in hand on sides around them.
This well-fought game was played on a difficult playing surface, but full credit must be given to both teams as they tried to play good football most of the time.
The first half was dominated by the home team, who had taken an early lead when Mark Edmondson played a good pass through the defence for Ben Holt to latch onto and fire across the visiting keeper, to give the home the start they had wanted.
The rest of the half saw the home team dominate possession, but they failed to take their chances through either wayward finishing or good defending and goalkeeping, and it was still 1-0 at the interval.
The second half saw Waterloo commit more men forward and play the majority of the football, but the killer second goal was scored at the other end following a mistake by the keeper Gareth Ashley.
He spilled a low hard cross from Edmodson and the ball found a way into the net.
To their credit, the visitors continued to look to get back into the game, whilst leaving themselves open to the counter attack.
However, good defending by the home defence kept Waterloo at bay and with five minutes to go a Ben Holt shot was parried out in the air and substitute Nick Williams headed the third goal past the keeper as Tywyn remained joint top of the league.
