Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League round-up

BONT extended their lead at the top of the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League to seven points as they notched a convincing 5-2 home win over Padarn United last weekend.
With title rivals Tregaron Turfs being involved in the Central Wales Cup, the league leaders maintained their pace at the top of division one.
Michael Lowe maintained his scoring form with a brace for the home side, and further goals from Andrew Gilbert, Andre Marsh and Owain Schiavone completed a solid victory.
Bont forced the early pressure with a number of corners, but Padarn looked dangerous on the break, particularly when Lee Jones got onto the ball.
The hosts opened their account on 15 minutes with a lobbed shot from 25 yards out by Andrew Gilbert, and they made it 2-0 when Padarn failed to clear a defensive header and Michael Lowe rose to head over the keeper.
Bont forward Jamie Evans had a goal disallowed for offside, but Padarn’s offside trap was broken by Lowe when he stroked the ball past the keeper in the bottom right corner.
Padarn replied positively and they managed to reduce the arrears in the second half from a corner, with the ball being met at the near post.
Bont’s response was instant when the ball was worked across the box and a neat pass put player-boss Andre Marsh into the box, and he drilled past the keeper at his near post for 4-1.
A few minutes later, a well-worked one-two between Marsh and Owain Schiavone ended with Owain curling the ball into the top right corner from outside the box to put Bont 5-1 up.
Jamie Evans hit the bar and Andrew Gilbert had a one-on-one saved, but Padarn came back strongly and forced corner after corner before finally scoring again from a corner for 5-2.
The last 20 minutes were scrappy as both teams tired on a heavy pitch. Lee Jones fired over the bar from a deflected cross as Padarn finished strongly.
Meanwhile second-placed Machynlleth, who have played two more matches than Bont, failed to keep pace as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Penrhyncoch Reserves on Saturday.
Two early goals by Mark Jarman earned the Cae Baker club its seventh league win this season, to move above Tregaron into third place, while Simon Davies replied for visiting Mach.
Llanrhrhystud finally registered their first league win of the season, after 12 matches, as they recorded a 2-1 win on their travels at Aberdyfi.
Twenty minutes in, Andrew Wintle chipped the keeper from 20 yards for the first goal, and Llanrhystud missed several chances to extend their lead.
Aberdyfi equalised midway through second half after a great one-two which was finished by Jamie Powl.
However, Llanrhystud pushed for the winner, and were awarded a penalty five minutes from time after Dean Tinsley was brought down in the box.
Andrew Wintle stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty for Llanrhystud’s first win in the league.
Aberystwyth University Reserves hit back to record their fifth successive league win as they claimed a 3-2 win against Tywyn/Bryncrug Reserves.
Goals from Gareth Griffiths and Peter Rickard saw Tywyn leading 2-0 just after half time, but they then conceded a penalty and the students turned the tables with two more goals.
In the Cambrian Tyres division two, Dolgellau Reserves maintained their title challenge as goals from Meirion Jones and Tom Evans secured a 2-1 win at rivals Borth United, who had hit the net through Shaun Tooley
The Meirionnydd men are three points behind leaders Trawsgoed, with two games in hand, after they won 5-1 against Aberdyfi Reserves.
A Chris Pike double, and goals from Barry Powell, Declan Lennon and Jonathan Bates completed their win, while Mat Turner replied for Dyfi.
Aberystwyth University Thirds made it seven wins from nine league games as they took all three points in a closely-fought 3-2 home win over Penrhyncoch Thirds, with Martin Evans and John James scoring replies.

Cwpan Cereredigion Third Round

BOW Street Reserves are through to the quarter-finals of the Cwpan Ceredigion after they notched up a convincing 4-1 home win over Cambrian Tyres division one rivals Llanilar.
It was a fine start for new manager Barrie Jones, as goals from Mark Evans, Marc Loosley, Gerwyn Evans and Gerwyn Loosley sealed victory.
Morgan Roberts-Young scored a late consolation goal for Llanilar, but were it not for the heroics of ex-Street keeper Nathan Bennett, the winning margin would have been greater.
“After the upheaval of the week, it was great to get a game played, and I could not have asked for more from the boys today,” commented Jones.
“This is a competition that we aim to make a big effort in, and I asked for a special effort today for the former manager, Allan Evans, who has done sterling work in the last two years.
“My man of the match was Ian Evans, who had settled in to his new position of centre back very confidently.”
The draw for the last eight will see Bow Street Reserves entertain Padarn.
Either Talybont or Tregaron Tregaron Turfs will play hosts to Lampeter, while holders New Quay have home advantage against Maesglas, and Dolgellau Reserves have been awarded a home tie against Cardigan Town.

Central Wales Cup Fourth Round

TREGARON Turfs produced a performance to be proud of before they finally bowed out of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup with a 2-1 defeat against their Cymru Alliance opponents Berriew.
Urged on by a sizeable crowd, the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League side made their visitors battle all the way for their quarter-final place in the competition.
Ishmael Abberton should have done better from six yards for the home side as the match started at a high tempo, but it was Berriew who took the lead after 20 minutes when a corner from the right by Mark Jones was headed home by Mark Probert.
His brother Ian Probert then netted Berriew’s second goal on 35 minutes when he was given too much room to cut in from the left and fire low and hard from 15 yards out.
Abberton had another chance to score for Tregaron before half time, only to be denied by an excellent save.
The second half was a classic cup tie as Tregaron searched for a breakthrough, and despite the field cutting up, both sides still played great attacking football.
Tregaron got their deserved goal on 75 minutes when a punch by the keeper fell to Darren Davies to coolly chip the keeper from 25 yards out.
Despite further home pressure, the visitors held firm, but manager Dilwyn Daniel was delighted with his side’s performance. He said: “The club is very proud of all the players today, I would like to thank them, and all the people that helped on the day.”
