Llanidloes town council to fight parking charges plan

30 September 2009

PLANS to introduce charges for a car park left to the community in Llanidloes have been slammed by the town council.
The mayor of the town, Cllr Margot Jones, said that the proposals for Church Place Car Park by Powys County Council were “out of order”.
Councillors also expressed concern over allegations that a public notice informing people of the right to comment or object was not posted on-site until 17 September, eight days after it was dated, giving less time to respond.
The matter was discussed at Monday’s town council meeting with letters from residents being received.
Cllr Jones said: “This is atrocious, residents struggle to park as it is.
“And we all understand the sentimental value of the land as it was given by a local family to the town.
“This is completely out of order.”
The council said that Cecil Holmes, the late husband of Ruby Holmes at the Crown and Anchor public house, had left the land to the town in 1970.
Lady Hooson said: “We need to object as strongly as we can.”
Cllr Pam Smith added: “We should stress the moral aspect, it was gifted to the people of Llanidloes so we should make sure it is used for the people of Llanidloes."
Councillors agreed to object to the proposals, and to examine their archives to see if they could find evidence regarding the use of the land.
The mayor added: “We also need to challenge the fact that the public notice was not put up until eight days after it was dated.”
A spokesperson for Powys County Council said that the only legal requirement they had was to ensure that a public notice appeared in a local newspaper three weeks before the end of the consultation date.
