Tregaron bow out of Swalec Bowl

11 October 2010

Swalec Welsh Bowl

Tregaron 12 Fishguard 26

TREGARON’s hopes of a good run in the Swalec Bowl competition ended at the first hurled as they succumbed to a home defeat at the hands of Division Five West high-flyers Fishguard. The visitors looked lively from the outset and they managed to open up a nine-point advantage courtesy of three penalties from Huw Evans, but Tregaron’s heavier forwards looked capable of turning things around. Dorian Pugh reduced the arrears when he powered over for a try that was successfully converted by Llion Jones, but the visitors went into half-time 14-9 ahead thanks to a good try from Steve Jenkins, who smashed his way through two tackles before crossing the try line. Tregaron were punished again in the second half as winger Matthew George also crossed the line in the second period, after being put away on the blind side. However, the Ceredigion men continued to battle and rewarded with a second try, this time from Gary Rees. Fishguard’s lively back continued to torment the home side and had the final say when Evans ghosted though the home defence and put Mike Jenkins over for a debut try, and Evans added the extra points. Tregaron, who have won four out of five matches in Division Six West this season, face another tricky assignment this weekend when they travel to Pantyffynnon, who have the same number of points so far.

Cardigan 77 Lampeter College 10

THE biggest cheer of this very one-sided affair came in the final seconds of the match when Lampeter College scored their only try of the game, through prop Zen Switzak, to end a miserable afternoon for the visitors, writes Andrew Clarke. The students struggled to field a full side for this historic first ever senior encounter between the two teams and started the match with only 13 players and the result was all but over after 20 minutes with Cardigan 24-0 up, thanks to tries from outside half Jac Lewis, full back Nathan Murphy, No 8 Llyr Griffiths and centre Aled Phillips, with Lewis adding the extras. The visitors managed to muster an extra player, but they could do little to stop Cardigan running in tries at will, and full back Murphy completed his hat-trick before half time, and there was also a try for tearaway flanker Gethin Davies. Lampeter College’s scrum half Chris Quigley tried his utmost to bolster his side up after the break, but his troops struggled to contain a much more powerful pack of forwards and tries soon followed when wingers Rob Davies and Rhydian Jenkins and centre Phillips crossed, and second row Robert Connolly slotted over a conversion to take his side 58-0 ahead.  The visitors though never gave up and finally got themselves on the scoresheet when Quigley chipped over a short range penalty awarded by ref Jason Ludgate. Replacement winger Kieran Hurley ran in for a try soon after following good interplay between the home backline, which was also converted by Connolly, and the strong running winger also ran in for the try of the match late on when he combined well with impressive No 8 Griffiths to score. Connolly converted, before winger Rob Davies crossed for the last home try. However, to their credit, and much to the delight of the large crowd in attendance Lampeter College enjoyed the final say of this one-sided game when their forwards eventually crossed wide out to claim a well received try by Zen Switzak, which inside half Quigley aptly converted following his fine individual effort. This miss-match was no more than a training run for coach Rob Evans and his side and they will face a much tougher assignment this weekend when they take on Betws in Division Four West encounter.
• Llanybydder also booked their ticket into the second round of the Swalec Welsh Bowl with a convincing 31-11 home win over Division Six West side Llangadog.
