Shock as town's bakery closes after 160 years
A DOLGELLAU bakery has closed after trading for 160 years.
Popty’r Dref in the town, formerly known as the Criterion Baker, had been trading since the early 1850s. It was run by the Davies family until 1985 when it was sold to Maggie and Evan Roberts, who continued in particular
with the famous honey buns that attracted customers from a wide area.
The Roberts family sold the bakery and shop to Elwyn Vaughan, the former MD of Cymad, some years ago and more recently Mr Vaughan was partnered by Peter and Mandy Price of Dolgellau.
A notice in the bakery window says: “Peter and Mandy Price would like to thank all our customers for your loyalty and belief in us since we took over the running of Popty’r Dref.
“Unfortunately not everyone has the same belief in us and it is for this reason that the bakery has closed.
“We would like to make it clear that it was not our decision to close down.
“It is sad to think that Dolgellau will no longer have its craft bakery after trading for so many years. Once again thanks for your support.”
