'Businesses don't want supermarket in Mach'
THE chairman of Machynlleth’s Chamber of Trade claimed this week that the majority of businesses do not want Tesco to come to town.
Jeweller Kelvin Jenkins said that after speaking to 23 businesses in town, just four had said they were in favour of the superstore.
Planning applications to build a store on the site of the Travis Perkins and Farmers Market were submitted last month and since then has created a real debate in the town.
He said: “I went around 23 shops in Machynlleth; 10 were against Tesco, four were in favour and the remaining nine had no definite opinion.
“People keep saying the shops are objecting because they are just looking after their own interests.
“It wouldn’t affect my business although I guess if anything I might actually be marginally better off if Tesco came here. I just don’t think it would be an improvement to the town.”
Mr Jenkins also spoke of his disappointment after his shop - and home - was targeted by Tesco supporters last week. Miscellannea, owned by Anne Nixon was also attacked with eggs and posters.
