Historic lifeboat may return to Aberystwyth

25 August 2010

A LIFEBOAT which saved the lives of 14 people in Aberystwyth may return to the town next year, during the 150th anniversary of the RNLI station.

Former Aberystwyth mayor Hywel T Jones is hoping that plans can be made for ex-RNLI lifeboat Aguila Wren to go on display next year.

The Aguila Wren saved 14 lives in Aberystwyth between 1951 – 1964, and a further 28 lives in Redcar, North Yorkshire, between 1965 - 1972.

And on hearing that the scheduled date for completion of the restoration work was 2011, Mr Jones, of Edgehill Road, wants to see the boat back in Aberystwyth.

The boat is privately owned by Tim Kirton, who works in Berwick-upon-Tweed. And he has not ruled out a return.

Pictured: Looking at old photos of the Aguila Wren are Bryan Pugh-Jones, - former RNLI Member with a 50 year service and is the Launching Department Authority for the Lifeboat Station, Richard Griffiths - Operations Lifeboat Manager and Hywel Jones.
