Trade 'slumps by half during road closure'

FURIOUS Cardigan shopkeepers are claiming their trade slumped by more than a 50 per cent because of a ‘surprise’ three-day road closure for the town’s 900th birthday celebrations.

The ‘big weekend’ was organised by the town’s 2010 committee as the main event of a year-long calendar to draw in visitors and mark the town’s 900th birthday.

Over the three days the High Street was closed off and filled with fairground rides and food stalls. But the move has been criticised for driving business away and into the hands of fair organisers and stall holders.

Mike Sabiston from Cardigan Sports said it left him 50 per cent down on his expected takings and he was fuming about not being notified of the situation sooner.
