Assembly agrees to early closure of empty school

AN empty primary school at Mydroilyn will now close in September instead of January after intervention by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The county council was accused of wasting money for keeping the school open until 1 January despite there being no pupils enrolled for the autumn term.

But the school will now close on 1 September after the Welsh Assembly Government agreed to a modification to the original statutory closure date.

News the pupil-less school would have to remain open until January came just a week after it emerged Capel Iwan school must remain open for up to a year despite having no pupils - at a cost of £110,000 to Carmarthenshire County Council.

The closure of Mydroilyn primary school was requested by Ceredigion Council earlier this year and, when no objections were received, a date was set for January 2011.
