Record-breaker Gwilym watched over 28,000 films

26 August 2010

A WORLD record holder from Dolgellau has died.

Gwilym Hughes, 65, earned his place in the June 2008 Guinness Book of Records for the third time for breaking the record for “Most Films Seen in the World” after viewing 28,075 films.

He got his first certificate from Guinness in 1991 for a record of 20,064 films and his house, which he shared with his wife Eirlys and cat Solstice, was full of films, memorabilia and reference books.

Locals have been saddened to learn that Mr Hughes passed away over the weekend. Not only was Mr Hughes well known in the town, but also across the nation and his campaign for Welsh films to be considered for the Oscars led to Hedd Wyn being the first Welsh film nominated for an Oscar for ‘best foreign film’.
