Teenagers die as car hurtles into lake
TWO ABERYSTWYTH teenagers have been killed in an horrific early-hours crash when a car carrying five people hurtled off the road, down a bank, and finished upside-down in a small lake.
Anwen Busby, 16, from Rhydybont, Penparcau, and Jai Burkes, aged 18, from Clawdd Helyg, Comins Coch, died in the crash which occurred at about 12.30am on Tuesday on the A44 road at Llywernog, between the Bwlch Nant yr Arian forest visitor centre and the Red Kite cafe, near Ponterwyd.
The driver of the car, 21-year-old Ashley Williams, who also lives a few houses away from Jai in Clawdd Helyg escaped from the vehicle to raise the alarm and two 16-year-old girls were rescued when police officers waded into the chest-deep water to release them from the car, via the boot of the vehicle. It is understood that Anwen and Ashley were girlfriend and boyfriend.
It is thought that the car was travelling from the Aberystwyth direction at the time.
The driver was taken to Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth, for treatment to injuries which are not bel
ieved to be life threatening.
Williams has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has been bailed by police until 4 September, while investigations continue.
Charlotte Tourle, 16, of 14 Heol y Garth, Penparcau, who worked at Cafe Morgan in Terrace Road and 16-year-old Aimee Valentine both survived the crash.
