Bet y Bont marks 63 years running shop

BRYNCRUG shop owner Bet Edwards yesterday (Wednesday) celebrated her 80th birthday as well as 63 years of running the village shop.

Bet, known locally as Bet y Bontdue to her shop being located near the village bridge, has been running the business since she was 17 years old in 1947.

At 80, she is still up at 5am every morning to take care of the business she calls “her life”.

Siop y Pentre (The Village Shop) has been the family business for years. Bet’s parents used to run the shop when Bet was young, before she took over.

“Mam asked me when I was 17 whether I was going to go off to university or stay to work at the family business. I said I would work here for a trial year and I have been here ever since.
