Charity shop takes £250,000 but gets axe

23 November 2011

VOLUNTEERS in Aberystwyth’s Wales Air Ambulance shop have been left stunned by a decision to close it - even though it has taken more than a quarter of a million pounds for the charity since it opened.
Lorely Lansley, who works at the shop six days a week, said they have been told that the shop will close on 21 December.

But with manageress Sue Macken leaving on Saturday, staff believe it could close even sooner.

The shop in Terrace Road has generated about £3,000 per week since it opened in February 2010 and all the volunteers are devastated by the news.

Lorely said: “The shop’s lease ends in January, and head office will not renew it, although we take in about £150,000 per year.

“We were informed by phone on Friday that the shop is closing. There are some seven volunteers, including two persons with learning difficulties. And we are all devastated by the closure.”

It is really disapointing for me when i read articles such as this that are very unfair and damaging to the excellent work that the charity does, providing the life saving service to Wales. I am very sure that they wouldnt be closing this shop if it was generating this much income if they didnt have to. Has anybody actually asked them what is happening as i was in the shop today and the workers there told me a very different story. As a survivor thanks to these guys i ask you to keep supporting this vital service not run it down
