Charity shop takes £250,000 but gets axe
VOLUNTEERS in Aberystwyth’s Wales Air Ambulance shop have been left stunned by a decision to close it - even though it has taken more than a quarter of a million pounds for the charity since it opened.
Lorely Lansley, who works at the shop six days a week, said they have been told that the shop will close on 21 December.
But with manageress Sue Macken leaving on Saturday, staff believe it could close even sooner.
The shop in Terrace Road has generated about £3,000 per week since it opened in February 2010 and all the volunteers are devastated by the news.
Lorely said: “The shop’s lease ends in January, and head office will not renew it, although we take in about £150,000 per year.
“We were informed by phone on Friday that the shop is closing. There are some seven volunteers, including two persons with learning difficulties. And we are all devastated by the closure.”
