Fancy dress axed

23 November 2011

A HUGELY popular fancy dress event in Llanidloes has been axed because of the increasing cost of providing stewards to combat troublemakers.

The event has attracted hundreds of people from all over Wales and England but some years have been marred by trouble.

The day after this year’s event, 19-year-old Fancy Dressgoer Lewis Clarke was killed in a flat in Longbridge Street by a single punch delivered by Blaine Kirkham, 20, of New Road, Newtown, who was subsequently jailed for three and a half years after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

In 2008, a 13-year-old girl was raped by a man in a fancy dress costume. Her attacker was later jailed for seven and a half years.

The event has also been blighted by other incidents in recent years, including public order offences, criminal damage and assaults.

Following meetings with the town council, police and emergency services, and representatives from the LVA and Chamber of Trade, the organising committee said the event would not go ahead in 2012.
