DIGNITARIES from the Republic of Belarus paid a visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth last week, as part of a fact-finding exercise by Minsk University to develop its own environmental research centre.

CAT hosted a visit by four dignitaries led by the Belarusian vice-chairman of the State Committee for Standardization, Leonid Shenec, to seek ideas on establishing a masters’ programme at the Volma Environ-mental Centre. One of the party, Prof Aleh Rodzkin, invited staff of CAT’s Graduate School for the Environment to attend the International Sakharov Environmental University’s (ISEU) annual conference this year.

Other dignitaries at the event included Andrei Miniankou, head of the Department of Science and Technology, Policy and Foreign Economic Relations; and Prof Vasil Pashynski, head of the Department of Energy Efficient technologies of ISEU.

Paul Allen, external relations officer at CAT, said: “The centre was pleased to be able to host the minister and energy delegation from Belarus, and to take them through the knowledge and experience we have accumulated though our work in the energy sector over the past almost 40 years.
