Community hall reopens, five years after blaze

02 October 2013

A COMMUNITY hall that burned to the ground five years ago in a village near New Quay re-opened on Saturday. Dozens of villagers in Caerwedros gathered for the official opening of the new and improved Caerwedros Memorial Hall, featuring a sculpture by renowned local artist Ben Dearnley.

On New Year’s Day 2007, startled residents woke up to the sight of a burnt-out wreck where the hall once stood.

A freak lightning strike overnight had set the hall alight leaving a whole community shocked and suddenly without facilities to house its clubs, groups and shows. Five years on, the committee behind the ambitious bid to fund the build of a bigger and better hall celebrated with residents and special guests on Saturday afternoon.

The new hall will give village groups, including Caerwedros YFC, Adran yr Urdd, Siôn Cwilt Cloggers and Caerwedros Show, which suddenly found themselves homeless after the devastating fire, a new place to meet. Catrin Evans-Thomas, development officer for the project, said that there was “great pride” at the official opening of the new hall.
