£25,000 storm cash going to cycle event

19 February 2014

A CHUNK of the funding given to help Ceredigion recover from devastating storm damage will be used to support an Aberystwyth cycling event.

The Welsh Government has awarded £560,000 to Ceredigion Council towards the work required after the storms in January. Of that, the council is opting to use £25,000 to support the Tour Series Cycle event in May.

Some more of the funding, which the Welsh Government has said can be used to repair tourism infrastruc-ture or for marketing, could also be used for other events on the promenade, as the council looks to attract publicity for the promenade and the recovery from the damage caused.

Despite the council facing a £1.5m bill in cleaning up and repairing the storm damage, Bronwen Morgan, the council’s chief executive, has said it was decided to use a portion of the money to support the cycling event.

She said: “A part of the funding has been allocated to gap-fund the Tour Series Cycle event to be held on the promenade on Friday, 23 May. This event will be covered by ITV4 showing the start and finish of the race events on the promenade.

The event is part of the weekend Cycle Festival organised in Aberystwyth.
