Plans unveiled for sea defence project
THE Tywyn coastal defence work will begin by the end of this month, and could be completed as early as November this year.
Nearly 70 people turned out to the public meeting held last Wednesday, where construction contractors Jones Bros of Ruthin gave a presentation on their plans, which was followed by a question and answer opportunity.
The company showed detailed plans of the new sea defence, which involves construction of a new rock breakwater above low tide level, rock groynes, and rock revetment to protect 78 properties in the town.
It comes after significant damage caused to the sea-front after several storms, and falling beach levels over the past 100-years, have increased the risk of tidal flooding in the town.
Preparation work has already began on the sea front, and the public was told the existing groins would be removed by the end of this month, ready to be replaced by new ones, and that rock would be delivered between January and June.
The plans showed that the larger rock will be delivered by sea from Saint Malo, France, and Penmaenmawr Quarry in Penrhyn on 1,700-tonne ship deliveries, with smaller rock being delivered by road from north Wales quarries.
Plans also include reconstruction and repair of slipways and steps, as well as other minor refurbishments along the promenade, which will be done after the main sea defence has been completed.
