School will not be given a stay of execution

YSGOL Capel Seion will not be given a stay of execution, despite a promise of three years without review to make a success of a school federation.

A meeting of the full Ceredigion Council narrowly decided not to ask the council’s cabinet to reconsider its decision to start the closure process of the school despite pleas from around 50 representatives of the school for the time they were promised to boost pupil numbers.

Despite Plaid Cymru councillors backing a motion asking for the school to be given another 15 months to continue with the federation with another school, members of the ruling coalition voted to accept the closure decision from the cabinet. The closure of Mydroilyn School was also confirmed.

School representatives were told when they entered a federation with other schools more than a year-and-a-half ago that they would have three years without being reviewed before the future of the school was decided.

However, with 15 months of that three years still to run, the council has taken the decision to close the school.
