Lack of polling cards causes election chaos

RESIDENTS in Llanidloes have been left confused and concerned after they failed to receive any polling cards for last week’s town council by-election.

The by-election for the council seat on Hafren Ward last Thursday (18 February), which was won by businessman Benji Rees, saw a paltry 26 per cent turn-out from voters, with many residents unsure if they could vote, or even if there was an election taking place that day.

When the matter was raised at Monday’s town council meeting, Llanidloes mayor Cllr Margot Jones urged councillors to “move on” and said that there were more severe problems with the hospital and the schools to be discussed.

The Llani Information Network, a messaging system used by local residents, was inundated with e-mails from confused residents on Thursday, with people wanting to know if they could vote as they had not received a polling card.
