Jay hopes trek goes off with a hitch

24 February 2010

A TEENAGER will be embarking upon an epic 2,000-mile journey with no money or means of transport in hopes of raising funds to educate poor village children in Morocco all which started because of his own irregular bus service.

Jay Evans, 19, will be putting his recently acquired hitch-hiking skills to the test this summer as he attempts to get himself all the way to a small village in the Moroccan mountains.

And he said he is hoping to raise around £1,000 for struggling villagers along the way in hopes of funding a school bus to ensure all children have access to ongoing education as well as knitting machines to help widows support themselves by making and selling clothes.

Despite never having hitch-hiked more than a bus journey to and from his home, the former Newcastle Emlyn secondary school pupil said he hopes to reach his destination in just seven days when he sets off in May.

Jay, who lives in Beulah, said: “I’ve hitchhiked a few times because the bus services here are so unreliable and it can be the only way of getting about, but this is something completely different.
