20mph limit to put brakes on boy racers

03 March 2010

A 20MPH speed limit is to be imposed on streets in Aberystwyth town centre to put the brakes on boy racers and other dangerous drivers.

But the plans announced by Ceredigion County Council chiefs won’t include Great Darkgate Street, Bridge Street and Alexandra Road because they form part of the A487 trunk road and are controlled by the Welsh Assembly.

There have long been complaints about boy racers and a lack of action by the police, and the council’s imposition of a 20mph zone on streets on the seafront side of Great Darkgate Street has been welcomed by local councillors.

Cllr Ceredig Davies said it would stop people using the town’s streets “as a racetrack” in the evening, but critics argue that such anti-social drivers are not the kind of people to obey the new limit.

Has common sense become the rarest of traits? What sort of logic suggests that all you need to do to reduce irresponsible driving is to lower the speed limit. If the roads have been rated as being safe to travel on at up to 30mph that isn't changed because some road users don't comply. The truth of course is that no speed limit is correct 24hours a day, 365 days a year. At times it will be too high and at other times too low. The answer is to raise driving standards so that drivers drive accordinlgy for the prevailing conditions at any given time. Unfortunately we still let drivers ignore that responsibility by telling them what the 'safe' speed is, even when it isn't. Why aren't the Police able to deal with the issue by advising/prosecuting those who are responsible as it seems they are easy to spot. An unmarked traffic car making a few vists at appropriate times is surely a better option.
