School closure feedback deadline is extended

GWYNEDD Council has extended a deadline for feedback from villagers who said they were not fully consulted on the closure of primary schools in the Tywyn area.

A questionnaire had been distributed to locals on how they believed the closure would affect their communities, but a number of complaints were logged after the council admitted sending the questionnaire only to headteachers and not residents.

The deadline for the six-page questionnaire is now 15 March, and the bilingual form asks about such things as the community’s relationship with the school, the effect of the plans on the Welsh language and parents’ transport arrangements.

It was sent out on 4 February, and should have reached everybody concerned with the reorganisation scheme, but residents and campaigners are angry they were only received by the heads of schools.

The questionnaires can be collected from local schools or downloaded from Gwynedd Council’s website and returned by 15 March.

A meeting will also be held at Aberdyfi School on Wednesday, 10 March, with speaker Mervyn Benford from the Small Schools Association.
