Year-long celebrations for Cob's 200th anniversary

THE first official meeting to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Cob in Porthmadog being opened was held in the town last week.

Nearly 50 people came to the meeting at the Ganolfan to show their support and to discuss ideas to mark the special occasion next year.

The Cob was officially opened on 17 September, 1811, and a committee of organisers has been set up to organise a fitting celebration for the Cob.

It was agreed that a year-long celebration should be held, with events taking place throughout 2011, culminating in a special event on 17 September, 2011.

Back in 1811, the official opening of the Cob was commemorated with a week-long celebration, with events taking place, including services at local churches, an eisteddfod with a special silver cup to the best Welsh Poet, and another to the best Welsh harper.
