150 lanterns launched off Consti

10 March 2010

A TOTAL of 150 lanterns lit the night sky above Constitution Hill, Aberystwyth, on Thursday, marking the start of the Cambrian News’ 150th birthday celebrations.

The event was the first of many taking place throughout the year across the newspaper’s circulation area to celebrate 150 years of your local newspaper.

The exciting launch started at 7pm and at 7.30pm the night-sky lit up in dramatic fashion as 150 Chinese lanterns were released into the heavens.

Then the party moved inside where guests ate food and listened to the vocal delights of Cambrian News sub-editor, singer, and acoustic guitarist Brooke DuBois, and local rock band The Infamous, featuring Cambrian News IT assistant Rhydian Davies.

Lighting a lantern in memory of her great grandfather, Sir John Gibson, the very first editor of the Cambrian News, was Eiluned Jones from Clarach.

Managing Editor of the Cambrian News, Beverly Davies, said: “It was a spectacular sight as guests each released a lantern in to the sky - 150 in total, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Cambrian News.

“Lots of residents and students were also watching the amazing light event from the promenade.

“It was a magical start to our anniversary celebrations and we were thrilled that the great granddaughter of our first ever editor was able to take part in the festivities.”

All money raised on the night, and throughout the rest of the anniversary year, will be donated to local charities.
