Petition in fight to save pensioners' bus service

10 March 2010

ANGRY campaigners have signed a petition to save a 40-year-old popular bus journey for senior citizens, after it was announced the unprofitable service would have to be discontinued.

Locals were upset when the Machynlleth to Chester service through Tywyn, Fairbourne and Dolgellau stopped running on Saturdays, as operators Lloyds Coaches were unable to find financial support for the service, which the firm was operating at a loss.

The 100-name petition was handed in to Gwynedd Council headquarters in Caernarfon by Llangelynin councillor Louise Hughes, who has been helping locals fight to save the service.

Campaigners gathered in Eldon Square Dolgellau were angry that Gwynedd Council, as well as Conwy and Wrexham councils, have not paid the full nationally-agreed rate on concession passes, meaning the company was losing money on a service for carrying senior citizens.
