Rhydyfelin teen battles for brain op

16 June 2010

A RHYDYFELIN couple are struggling to get the NHS in Wales to carry out a vital brain operation on their teenage daughter - and face an £8,000 bill to go private.

Huw and Sandra Goodchild, of Llwyn Coed, feel “totally let down by a once-reliable NHS”, as they struggle to get their daughter Hannah, 16, the treatment she needs without having to wait four months to even see a specialist.

Hannah was diagnosed in February with a little-known condition called “Arnold Chiari Type 1”, which arises from a malformation of the brain and her parents have tried every avenue to get the operation done.

Adding to their frustration, the operation is available “privately” in Birmingham this month - but costing £8,000, which they do not have.

Pictured, Hannah Goodchild is seen with her parents Huw and Sandra and her brother Jack, aged 11.
