Tesco forced to scrap plans - but will fight on
THE current bid for a Tesco store for Machynlleth, with 140 jobs, has been scrapped - after Welsh Assembly officials ruled that the planning application should be refused on safety grounds.
But the company told the Cambrian News that it would be submitting a fresh application in the near future.
The Welsh Assembly Government has directed Powys County Council to refuse the plans for a Tesco supermarket at Heol y Doll, saying it would lead to more road accidents.
Tesco responded yesterday, Tuesday, by withdrawing their current application for Machynlleth - although a new application will follow, they said.
An expansion of the town’s existing Co-operative store could still go ahead, after the Assembly passed that application back to the county council for determination.
And Co-operative confirmed this week to the Cambrian News that it is buying the old community centre, irrespective of whether planning permission is granted or not.
