Storms wreak havoc as winds reach 84mph

22 July 2010

GALE force winds reaching up to 84mph and torrential rain storms have wreaked havoc on the west-Wales coastline this week.

Roads become flooded, trees fell blocking roads, houses had blackouts after trees fell on power lines, holidaymakers returned home from the battered caravan sites and lifeboat crews were busy on the sea.

The Met Office confirmed it had recorded gusts of 84mph at Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula and constant wind speeds of around 65mph. Barmouth, Harlech and Porthmadog were also badly hit by the strong winds.

In Pwllheli, a Mercedes driver had a lucky escape after a tree fell in the strong winds, landing on a transit van, which shielded the Mercedes from the fall.
