Residents' anger at Tesco's 6am opening
RESIDENTS living near Porthmadog’s Tesco store have spoken of their anger that the store is now allowed to open from 6am because planners failed to impose restrictions.
The store could theoretically open 24 hours a day, as no limitations were placed on the store’s opening hours in the original planning permission in 2002.
he store changed its opening hours from 7am - 10pm, to 6am - midnight on 5 July, and local residents are asking whether this was done with proper consent from the planning authorities.
Jim Abel, who lives at Trem y Graig, and whose house backs onto the store, said: “I’ve done some research into this matter, and it seems that, in the original planning consent, Tesco was allowed to open between 7am and 10pm, including deliveries and the petrol station. That was what we were led to believe anyway.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “Our original planning permission did not have any restrictions on opening hours and we are happy to be able to offer more convenient hours.”
