Cardigan make stuttering start

02 March 2010

Swalec Division Three West

Laugharne 22

Cardigan 11

CARDIGAN stuttered to another disappointing defeat in the Swalec Welsh League Division Three West, this time at the hands of Laugharne, writes Andrew Clarke.
The Cardis were without a number of key individuals on the day, including influential outside half Mike Diggle, and coach Neville Roberts will be hoping for a full squad for this weekend’s important relegation battle at Llanelli Wanderers.
The visitors had found themselves down by 17 points very early in this game, with former town skipper Barry John opening the home team’s account with a try.
This was followed by a touchdown for powerful number eight Colin Pearce. Stand off Jack Tremlett then added a penalty, to go with his two conversions, and there seemed no way back for the visitors.
However skipper Dylan Davies and his men chipped away, and they hit back with a penalty from Arwyn Wilson just before the break, and he slotted another over just afterwards to take his side back to 17-6.
However, just as Cardigan appeared to be getting themselves back into the game, Laugharne scored a try against the run of the play when a hopeful kick was sent towering into the visitors’ 22 metres, and this was gathered by second row Chris Thomas to claim an unconverted score.
Cardigan had the final say when full back Jack Lewis made the initial burst and fed Aled Phillips. He released right winger Rhydian Jenkins who kicked ahead and beat his marker to score in the corner.
