Cardigan in relegation danger
Swalec Division Three West
Llanelli Wanderers 27
Cardigan 6
RELEGATION is now looking a real possibility for Cardigan after their much-weakened side slumped to an away defeat at fellow strugglers Llanelli Wanderers.
The Cardis, who have been hit hard by injuries to key players, have been dragged down into the relegation zone beneath the Wanderers, Haverfordwest and Lampeter, and one of these three looks set for the drop, alongside struggling Llanybydder.
This game was all but over by the half-time break, with the hosts 21-3 to the good, although to be fair to Cardigan they rallied after the interval and came back with a much-improved second half performance.
Stand off John Griffiths opened the Wanderers’ account with a penalty after two minutes, and he bagged two more, before Arwyn Wilson replied for the visitors.
The Llanelli-based outfit went further ahead when full back Adam Thomas finished off a move from a restart, with the opposition caught ball-watching, and further salt was rubbed into the wounds when winger Gary Peters crossed for a try to take his team well ahead at half time.
Griffiths converted and he added two more penalties in the second half, before Wilson slotted over his second penalty of the afternoon to complete the scoring.
The visitors enjoyed far more of the play in the final quarter and worked hard to create chances, but the home defence held firm. Cardigan full back Jac Lewis joined the fast growing injury list when he dislocated his shoulder and the very talented footballer is out for the rest of the season.
There was also more bad news for Cardigan as tricky running outside half Mike Diggle has also been told he will not play again this term as he suffered a broken jaw in a collision against Haverfordwest.
• Llanybydder are rooted to the foot of the table, with just one win from 14 outings, after losing 25-20 at Haverfordwest.
