Aberaeron stage stirring second half show
Swalec Division Five West
Swansea Uplands 0
Aberaeron 60
AMASSING another record score, Aberaeron keep the pressure on the front runners with this emphatic win over hapless Swansea Uplands, writes Parry Evans.
Following another week of inactivity, it was a case of brushing away the cobwebs once again before putting the home team to the sword with a real scintillating second half performance.
One must feel more than a little sorry for the hosts as endeavour alone is no match to tactical guile and raw pace, and they would have been content to hear the final whistle to avoid further embarrassment.
The opening period however had been a dour affair, with the visitors failing to break through a determined home defence, and with a far from happy Aberaeron coach, Alwyn Davies pacing up and down the touchline.
Indeed the clock had ticked to midway through the half before Aberaeron finally clicked with impressive centre Tom Taylor forcing his way over to the relief of the visiting support.
The Aberaeron forwards were content to keep the ball tight and this inadvertently played into the hands of the hosts as their ageing front eight were content to spoil and disrupt possession.
Continuous pressure however eventually bore fruit as strong running number eight Ywain ap Dylan helped himself to a brace of tries to relieve the frustration and give a comfortable cushion at the interval.
The second half proved a different affair as Aberaeron finally displayed flair and ruthlessness for which the home side had no answer.
In total the tryline was crossed seven times in this period, with forwards and backs sharing the glory.
The hardworking front eight’s superior technique broke the hosts resilience with reward coming the way of hooker Gareth Flynn and captain Tudur Jenkins.
Effervescent flanker Dafydd Williams added to the tally before a storming run from deep within his half brought ap Dylan’s hat-trick. From there on it was a question of how many, and a closing quarter saw the backline cutting loose.
Aimless kicking gave full back Ollie Sawyer golden opportunities to counter attack and his enterprise resulted in a brace of tries for outside half Llyr Davies, whose overall return on the afternoon was 20 points.
The final try brought the loudest cheer of the game as wing Rhodri Thomas crossed after a series of missed opportunities, and the final whistle signalled the end of an entertaining second half, and a finally satisfied Aberaeron coach.
