THE headteacher of Eglwyswrw CP School improved pupils’ test scores after feeling “under pressure” to hit Welsh Government targets, a hearing was told last week.

Shan Harries, 47, is alleged to have changed Year 6 pupils’ test results after Estyn set the school new targets for Welsh writing.

The hearing heard how the experienced teacher raised pupils grades despite there being “no evidence” they had reached that level.

Deputy headteacher Tim Davies told the hearing that one autistic child had “a very challenging time” after being set the target.

The Year 6 teacher said: “He had a very challenging time during that last term at school.

“Whatever lessons were taught and whatever resources were used to reach the level it was not going to happen.

“I had a conversation with Mrs Harries about the level and it did get a bit heated because I was trying to persuade her to change it.

“She had increased the levels because there were concerns of inspectors at Estyn.”

The headteacher was in charge when Estyn visited Eglwyswrw in December 2013.
