Two Meirionnydd campaigners who lost relatives in traffic accidents have launched a petition urging the Welsh Government to improve road safety on the A487.

The petition is calling for the Welsh Government to take urgent action to improve the A487 between Gellilydan and Maentwrog, following two fatal accidents.

The petition has been set up by Sioned Wyn Williams and Carron Jones.

Sioned suffered serious injuries during an accident that killed her sister, Anna Williams; Sioned’s six-month-old daughter, Mili Wyn Ginniver; and her dog, in January 2018.

Carron lost her cousin, Fflur Green, in another accident in July this year.

They have been working with Trawsfynydd councillor Elfed Powell Roberts, who has been campaigning for the better safety measures on the road since January 2018, and local resident Elfed Jones to set up the petition.

While a 40mph limit and anti-skid paint are in the pipeline, Sioned and Carron are calling for more to be done, more quickly, including CCTV.

The petition has so far attracted 1,364 signatures and local businesses have shown their support by keeping copies on their counters.

The campaigners are now hoping that the petition can reach the 5,000 signature mark needed to be considered for debate by the full Assembly.
