Work to demolish an eyesore hotel in Harlech could start as soon as September, according to a local action group.

Harlech in Action has been in consultation with the Welsh Government, Snowdonia National Park and Gwynedd Council over the future of the St David’s Hotel.

Following concerns from residents, the park authority placed a demolition order on the hotel in December 2015.

The owners, Aitchison Associates, failed to comply with the order and, as a result, have been prosecuted and fined on two occasions for non-compliance.

Despite this, the owners are still not taking forward the demolition of the hotel.

The failure to demolish the hotel means that the park authority has the legal power to carry out the demolition itself and charge the cost to the owners or, if they fail to pay, to put a legal charge on the site.

However, it is understood that the hotel owners could also be considering a smaller hotel on the site and looking at the possibility of re-using the existing building.

Philip Mills from Harlech in Action said: “Such a proposal is likely to require a new planning consent which would take some time to secure. It is impossible to say at this stage whether this is a realistic proposition or another proposal from the owners which goes nowhere.”
