SAFETY measures have been introduced on a deadly Meirionnydd road to try and prevent further loss of life.

Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd Liz Saville Roberts met with Welsh Government economy and transport secretary Ken Skates to press for urgent road safety measures on the A487 between Maentwrog and Gellilydan following a spate of serious and fatal accidents on the road.

Between 2016 and 2017 there were 26 accidents on the A487 between Maentwrog and Gellilydan, the latest of which claimed the lives of Anna Williams from Penrhyndeudraeth and her six-month-old niece Millie Wyn Ginniver and seriously injuring Millie’s mum, Sioned.

The meeting was organised by the local county councillor for the area, Elfed Roberts who has been campaigning on the issue.

It followed calls from the local MP and community leaders in Maentwrog for an immediate reduction in the speed limit on the busy trunk road which is notorious for its sharp, dangerous bends and steep ravines.

Speaking after the meeting last Thursday, Mrs Saville Roberts said: “I welcome today’s constructive meeting with both the Welsh Government Cabinet secretary for transport, Ken Skates and representatives from North Wales Trunk Road Agency alongside Cllr Elfed Roberts and community representatives.

“As the local MP, I was able to echo longstanding calls to improve safety on the A487 between Maentwrog and Trawsfynydd.

”I’m pleased that the Minister responded positively to our concerns and has committed to taking steps to address the situation.

“As a short term temporary measure, signs advising motorists to slow down will be erected along the stretch of road between Maentwrog and Gellilydan, known locally as Oakley Drive.

“Dependent on the Police Accident Review being published in time, there will be a review of speed and safety on the A487 between Maentwrog and Trawsfynydd during the first phase of the Welsh Government’s Speed Review, due for publication this financial year.”
