The Welsh Government has rejected calls from local councillors to reduce the speed limit in Llanbadarn Fawr due to safety fears.

Llanbadarn Fawr councillors Gareth Davies and Matthew Woolfall Jones, alongside Elin Jones MS, wrote to the transport minister Ken Skates to call for traffic-calming measures in the village.

The letter calls for a 30mph limit on the A44 trunk road, from Glan yr Afon Industrial Estate into the village, particularly with the recent increase in cyclists and the lack of footpath under the railway bridge.

Cllr Davies told the Cambrian News: “I have been campaigning over a number of years. The 30mph speed limit is just before you get to the bend. What I would have liked to have done, and I’ve approached the Welsh Government previously on this, would be to extend the 30mph to past Glan yr Afon and extend the 40mph to just before the Lovesgrove straight.

“Residents have complained that people travel too fast around that area, it becomes a windy road and there is no pavement.”

The letter also highlights the issue of a safe crossing. “As you approach the village, the speed does change to 30mph just before a sharp corner. This corner is used often for pedestrians who need to cross and gain access into Clos Llety Gwyn and Cwrt yr Onnen. Currently this is the safest place for pedestrians to cross, but it is still very dangerous.”

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “We have completed a review of speed limits on the trunk road network in Wales. This considered many different factors, including accident data and complaints received, to assess the need for changes to the speed limit, engineering measures or enforcement.

“This particular section of trunk road will retain its current speed limit but, having taken account of the issues raised by pedestrians, we will be reviewing crossing opportunities.”

Cllr Davies said he was disappointed, but not surprised by the response from the Welsh Government: “That’s pretty much the reaction I’ve had from them in the past.

“They’ve said in the past that, because there isn’t much evidence of accidents alongside this stretch of the road, they don’t see the need to change the speed limit.”

But both Cllr Davies and Cllr Woolfall Jones are pleased to hear that the installation of a crossing in the area will be considered.

Cllr Woolfall Jones said: “It’s quite disappointing to hear that response from the government. They need to listen to the ward about what they need to improve. They are confident that the speed needs to be looked at.

“But the crossing is a really important point. So if there is anything positive to take out of this, it’s that they are considering that.”
