CAMBRIAN News managing editor Bev Thomas is organising a cheese and wine evening with a twist, as part of her pledge to raise £5,000 this year for Bronglais Hospital’s cardiac unit.
The cheese and wine event is being held at Penrhyncoch Village Hall on 9 June and will feature a ‘Quaff my Bluff’ game with prizes, along with entertainment, an auction and a raffle.
With ‘Quaff my bluff’, guests get the chance to sample six different wines. It is based on the popular BBC panel game of the ‘60s and ‘70s Call my Bluff, where teams had to identify the correct definition of an obscure word after hearing three possible options.
The vino version is a variation on the classic game - involving a bit of drinking, a certain amount of skill and lots of good-natured competition.
The aim of the game is to correctly identify a succession of wines which are poured blind, hidden in bags. After tasting the wine, teams have to decide which of three descriptions given by panellists is correct.
Bev says this will be the first of a series of events throughout 2017 to support Bronglais cardiologist Dr Donogh McKeogh and his team.
The pledge comes after Bev’s husband, Keith Thomas, underwent open heart surgery last year to repair two leaky valves.
Keith remains under the care of Dr McKeogh, and Bev’s father, David James - who will be 90 this year - was also helped by Dr McKeogh when he needed a triple bypass over a decade ago.
Bev said: “I wanted to set myself a fundraising challenge to say thank you to Dr McKeogh and his team for the excellent care they have taken of my husband and my father.Main sponsors for the event are Tesco Aberystwyth and Co-op.
