ANGRY residents of an Aberystwyth street have said their situation is “getting beyond a joke” after 16 cars were vandalised there in just six months.

Police were called to Glanrafon Terrace in Trefechan last Thursday morning after one resident discovered extensive damage to their car, a silver Volkswagen Passat estate, with signs someone had tried to gain entry to the vehicle.

Mother-of-two Cara Davies, whose partner Victor was borrowing the car from his father, said one of the locks on the car door had been hacked out, damage was caused to the door frame in what appears to be an attempt to prise the door open, and the registration plates had even been damaged.

But residents say this is just the latest in a string of incidents in which damage has been inflicted on cars in the street, with one resident estimating that 16 cars have been vandalised over the last six months alone, causing “thousands of pounds” of damage.

Cara and Victor have now had three cars from their household alone damaged in the past six months, including Victor’s work vehicle and Cara’s own car, both of which were “keyed”.

“I am so annoyed, it’s getting beyond a joke now,” Cara told the Cambrian News this week.

Trefechan councillor Martin Shewring, who has raised the matter with police, said: “The police have a ‘Stryker’ mobile CCTV system which can be used in areas of antisocial behaviour and they should be used more often down Glanrafon Terrace.”
