ABERYSTWYTH Town Council is hoping to secure funding to buy new equipment for playgrounds in Penparcau and Plascrug.

Members heard at a meeting last Monday that around £38,000 is available in funding from the Welsh Government to spend on play equipment in Ceredigion, and councillors have hatched a plan to get their hands on some of the cash.

Cllr Jeff Smith, chair of the council’s Finance Committee, suggested the council sought funding for the two playgrounds, with equipment already picked out.

In Penparcau, where some of the equipment is in a state of repair, councillors backed a plan to get an £8,000 climbing frame including chain, slide, monkey bars and platforms.

Cllr Smith said: “One of the pieces in Penparcau has come to the end of its life in my view.

“One of the planks has rotted half way through, boards have rotted and decayed especially around the bolts, seats are in a bad state, rust is everywhere on several bits of metal and lots of paint has gone.

“So I think we should put something in its place.

“Considering how old and out-of-fashion the old frame looked, something is needed that belongs in the 21st century.”

In Plascrug, councillors have identified a £4,000 ‘surf-spinner’ equipment to fill an empty space at the playground.
