Cymdeithas Hanes

YNG NGHYFARFOD diwethaf Cymdeithas Hanes a gynhaliwyd ar 20 Ebrill dechreuodd y Llywydd, Robin Davies, drwy dalu teyrnged i’r diweddar Athro Gwyn Thomas. Pwysleisiodd mai hogyn o Stiniog oedd a wnaeth erioed anghofio ei wreiddiau; yr oedd yn hynod o boblogaidd a dangoswyd ein cydymdeimlad â Jennifer a’r teulu a hefyd ein gwerthfawrogiad am ei wasanaeth i’r dref a’r genedl drwy godi ar ein traed yn y ffordd draddodiadol.Y darlithydd oedd Dr David Gwyn a’i destun ‘Tref y Lechen’ ac yr oedd yn hawdd deall yn ystod y ddarlith sut yr oedd wedi arbenigo yn archaeoleg chwareli llechi a’r rheilffyrdd yn gysylltiedig â nhw.Dechreuodd ei ddiddordeb pan oedd yn blentyn yn trafeilio efo’i rieni i draeth Morfa Bychan gan ofyn iddynt ei ollwng yn y Blaenau. Treuliau ei amser wedyn yn crwydro o gwmpas y dref a dod i wybod am y gwahanol chwareli.Dangosodd nifer o fapiau o Blaenau o’r 18fed ganrif ymlaen ac yr oeddech yn medru gwerthfawrogi datblygiad y dref oddi wrthynt. Clywsom ei ddisgrifiad o Blaenau fel “boom town”ac yn ei gymharu â Bolton neu Colorado fel lle diwydiannol a gafodd ei sefydlu yng nghanol y wlad gyda niferoedd o bobl yn llifo yno i chwilio am waith.Yn y dechreuad bu’r gweithwyr Blaenau yn byw mewn barics neu mewn bythynnod a godwyd wrth ochr y lein fach cyn i dai mwy sylweddol eu hadeiladu i’r dosbarth canol ac yn y blaen a ddaeth i’r dref yn sgil y capeli a’r ysgolion a godwyd. Clywsom am y gwahaniaeth yn y tai o gwmpas ardaloedd llechi eraill yn y gogledd fel Nantlle a Bethesda ac nid oedd y darlithydd yn teimlo fod tai Bron Haul a symudwyd o’r Blaenau i Arddangosfa Llechi Llanberis yn addas o gwbl i’r ardal honno.Yr oedd digon o holi ar ddiwedd y ddarlith a llawer yn mynnu eu bônt wedi dysgu llawer am ddatblygiad y dref. Gareth Jones dalodd y diolchiadau swyddogol yn pwysleisio faint buasai ei dad wedi mwynhau’r noson. Soniodd Gareth wedyn am y cyfarfod nesaf gan ofyn i’r rhai oedd yn bwriadu mynd i Ganolfan Glyndwr Machynlleth ar 18 Mai gysylltu â fo neu Gwenan drwy arwyddo’r nodyn oedd yn mynd o gwmpas. Hefyd soniodd am yr Arddangosfa sydd i’w hagor ar 31 Mai.
