Pub managers in Dwyfor Meirionnydd have responded to news that they will be able to reopen their beer gardens later this month.

First Minister Mark Drakeford announced on Friday, 1 April that outdoor leisure venues could reopen, including beer gardens, on 26 April.

Jane Jenkins is the manager of The Garthangharad in Llwyngwril.

She said: “I am happy that finally they have given us a date to open and due to time of year not overly worried that it’s outside only as in nice weather that is where people want to be.

“However, I believe quite strongly that the hospitality sector has been discriminated against throughout – we are always one of the last to open yet first to close and other close contact services are already open which doesn’t quite make sense to me!“

“There is no evidence hospitality was responsible for the spread of Covid, indeed we were not even open during the last peak in numbers.”

Heidi Bakewell is the manager of Y Bryncynan near Morfa Nefyn.

She said: “It’s been a long time coming but now we can plan for our reopening, order our stock, train new staff and do a phased return to work with our staff giving us time to support their mental health and wellbeing before what I can only predict to be a manic few months ahead.

“We can’t wait to welcome back customers old and new.

“Our regulars are part of the Bryncynan family and have been sorely missed.”

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “We know this has been a difficult time for businesses across Wales.

“Our package of business support worth more than £2 billion has been crucial in protecting thousands of firms and jobs.

“We are pleased that from 26 April outdoor hospitality can resume subject to public health conditions and final confirmation by ministers.”
