THE latest community news from Dyffryn Ardudwy & Talybont

Community Council

THE chairman congratulated Arron Tregenza on being elected to represent Gwynedd Council to sail from Liverpool to Dublin and then onto Cardiff.

Kieron Thomas was also congratulated on winning the British UBA Championship with boxing; Rachel English from The Castle hair salon on winning salon of the year and the owners and staff at London House on winning the sausage of the year prize.

The clerk reported that she had included financial regulations on the agenda because, as she had reported at the last council meeting that the Internal Auditor had stated that there was a need to re-adopt the above as they had not been adopted since 2002.

The members stated that they had read the contents of the above and that they were of the opinion that there was no need for any changes and therefore it was agreed unanimously to adopt the council’s Financial Regulations once again.

The chairman reported that he had attended a meeting of One Voice Wales on behalf of the council and that the chief executive of Gwynedd Council, Dilwyn Williams and the Deputy Leader of the council, Cllr Dafydd Meurig were present to discuss working and transferring more responsibilities to the community councils.

It was also made know that in the AGM Cllr Heulyn Williams from Dolgellau Town Council had been re-elected chairman of the committee and no vice chairman had been appointed.

The clerk reported that she had received a reply from Gwynedd Council’s highways department regarding installing a 30mph sign on top of Glan y Môr road.

The reply said speeding was a matter for the police in the long run as it is them who have the powers and the responsibility to enforce any speeding restriction.

Regrettably they have not got any rights to install additional 30mph with an area with street lighting.

The councillors reiterated their concerns on the issue of overnight parking in three laybys on the way into Llanbedr from Dyffryn Ardudwy site, the two by Bryn Bwyd and the one by Faeldref that needed signs in them.

The clerk reported that she had received a letter from Ysgol Ardudwy asking if it would be possible for some pupils from Year 9 to carry out work in the community as part of their activities week on the 11-12 July.

It was agreed to ask them to clear some of Penybont Garden, Talybont during the two days.

Gardening Club

THE day out this year on 11 June, was a visit to Treborth Botanical Gardens.

Last year, at one of the monthly meetings, they all enjoyed a talk given by Dr Shaun Russell, director of the gardens and decided that they would visit at the earliest opportunity.

The weather was stunning and they were given a very warm welcome.

The gardens are, possibly, the only ones in the UK which border the sea - the Menai Strait, and the ancient woodland section runs down to the shore.

The gardens were originally designed by Sir Joseph Paxton who worked here in the 19th Century.

The link across the Irish Sea from Anglesey meant that the area had many tourists and a grand hotel and garden was planned for the site.

Unfortunately it did not come to fruition but the foundations of the hotel together with a drainage tunnel, a waterfall and specimen trees can still be seen.

The visit took in three glasshouse, temperate, tropical and orchid all of which were stunning.

They saw an abundance of fascinating plants including Lithops and Carniverous species.

Treborth is an academic institution, part of Bangor University and has flourishing links to some of the biggest botanical gardens in the world including China, Lesotho and Tierra del Fuego.

To date, more than 500 varieties of moths have been recorded together with an impressive variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies.

Fundraising efforts are hoping to make the gardens accessible to many more people.

They wish them well as this is a special place undertaking important work.

Thanks to all at Treborth and also to Val for organising the trip.

The next meeting will be on 9 July, when a panel of experts will give them tips and tricks of use in the forthcoming Summer Show to be held in the village hall on 15 August.
